And two young boys, Sachin and Azaan, torn apart by the loss of a parent. It doesn’t get bigger.

Review : They say that you don’t judge a book by its cover, but RIP by Mukul Deva is an exception to this rule. The cover page has a quote from Outlook, “Here comes India’s Clancy or Ludlum or Forsyth” and another one from a CEO of Planman Motion Pictures refers this book as intense, engaging and dangerously addictive. The cover page has a silhouette of a soldier, with a bullet depicting the ‘I” of the RIP and a syringe pointing down… all these elements on the cover page pique your interest and raise your expectations.

With heightened interest and curiosity, you start reading the book. Right from the page 1, you are hooked to the book. The writing is quite crisp, fast paced and racy and makes you sit on the edge of the seat as you eagerly turn the pages. Though the pace slackens a bit when the family (emotional) sequences are shared.

The story is very contemporary and presents the current scenario and real life incidents/events of our country, though the solution provided by RIP is too implausible. While the Author’s note states that this book is a complete work of fiction and any resemblance to any person, party or organization is purely coincidental, fictitious and / or has been fictitiously used. When the book talks about the corruption in Commonwealth Games, Fodder scam, Bofors scam, the 2-G Spectrum scam, hijacking of IC-814, corrupt judges, politicians and the arms dealer, social activist Hazarika, Sheila Kaul the National Democratic Congress, Party President staying at 10 Janpath, Lalit Yadav and his brother-in-law Sheru Yadav… as a reader you can easily understand incidents and people from real life who are portrayed in these characters.

The K-team has members whose names start with alphabet K… Krishna, Karan, Kashif, Kunal, Kamlesh, Kevin, Kulwant…now this is a bit unrealistic in a very realistic fiction!!

There are a couple of minor errors in the book. A part of page 163 reads like this, “Thank you. Well, we are the pioneers in India’. Raghav was unable to keep a note of paternal pride out of his voice”… It should have been Krishna here!

RIP is certainly a book that will compel you to read it at one go, without any interruptions. Go for it, if you are looking for some thrilling and gripping reading.

  1. Good to see some good thrillers coming from Indian authors. I hope there will be more. These books might be made into movies. There is one director in the south who loves a story-line like this – Dir. Shankar. Someone should bring this book to his attention 🙂
