I heard the car’s horn.

I heard the door being opened and I felt my knees turn to jelly. Quickly, I hid under the bed.

I heard the door being slammed shut and his sugary voice, “Where are you, sweetie?”

I heard his footsteps on the stairs as sweat beads trickled down my spine. “Where are you, sweetie?”, he asked again.

I heard my heart pounding in my ears, as he opened and closed the adjacent room. “Where are you, sweetie?”, his voice was gentle yet coaxing.

I heard another car honk. It’s Mom and relief washed over me

    1. True, it is only the victim who is able to see the facade of the abuser. Sadly the others around take a long long time to recognize the evil behind the sweetness!

    1. Agree completely, SG!! They say, that either the child is threatened by the abuser to keep quiet or the child (though knows that whatever is happening is wrong) is clueless about the steps to take to prevent the abuse!

  1. Just want to add a few stuff. Here, it is the responsibility of the school teachers to be aware of and investigate if a student is unhappy or withdrawn or notice any bruise on the body.

If a child is taken to a hospital or doctor 3 times in a year for an β€œinjury or accident”, the hospital/doctor will call the police immediately. It is the law.

    1. True, teachers and parents should recognize the difference in behavioral pattern of the child and ask/probe/help the child.
Regarding this law… while, it may work out well abroad where the health data /records are centralized, well documented and online, I wonder if it is feasible in India where such advancements in record maintenance is still not a reality!

  2. Great piece and very well written. You’ve managed to get across the little girl’s feelings aptly. Sad that such events happens quite frequently with little kids

    1. Thanks Sid! Yes, such crimes against children happen so commonly. It is time we made our children aware about such abuse and break the silence and the stigma associated with this crime.

      1. When I read this , my heart missed a beat, I guessed it but was afraid to pronounce it. But let take a review and spin a sequel albeit a pleasant one.

  3. Those lines just gave me the creeps…well written. These creeps need to be flogged in public. Congrats on the WOW πŸ™‚

    1. Absolutely! But sadly, they are never caught and in case they are, they are rarely punished. Thanks Preethi πŸ™‚
