He didn’t like her idea. He felt it was restrictive and obligatory!

But she could foresee the future.

He cribbed and protested at every given opportunity.

But she smiled through it all.

And then, though it was not magic, but he could feel it too…

…the bond that deepened because of their daily dinner together!

A Word to the Wise

  1. This is why my husband never lets me feed him hot chapatis off the stove. He insists that I be done with everything so we can sit together and eat. In seven years of marriage, we have only eaten separately when his work kept him till past 1 a.m. Lovely post as usual, Shilpa, rituals are indeed what give that extra strength to a marriage πŸ™‚

  2. Beautifully said Shilpa. Simple acts add more meaning to a lovely relationship. They help us get over small quarrels too…Each day S calls me during lunch and when he is held up for some reason, either of us make it a point to text. It never fails to make me smile.

  3. Again, you hit the nail on the head. I love traditions. We didn’t seem to have many growing up, except for going back each January 17th to the restaurant at the hotel where we stayed when we moved to Salt Lake City to celebrate. :O)

  4. Oh yes, it doesn’t always have to be the fancy things … daily dinner together – yes please:-) Well written Shilpa:-)

  5. I’m loving it πŸ˜€ Such a simple thing, but this brings so much meaning, and so much depth in our relationships…. if that one phone call doesn’t happen on time, we miss the person so much πŸ™‚ From experience πŸ˜€

  6. Another good one, Shilpa! These little things matter a lot. They are actually not little if we think about them, these are the stuff of life, real life! Thank you πŸ™‚

  7. Very sweet post. It’s the little things that matter the most. Loved the picture and the words on it. Another gem from you Shilpa.

  8. I almost wrote R for Ritual this time then changed my mind πŸ™‚ This is so beautiful, Shilpa. We underestimate the value of our relationships and our apparently trivial rituals on a daily basis. What a simple way you have driven it home. πŸ™‚

  9. Traditions do not carry much meaning to mostly to new generation considering it to be a burden. Silver Lining is people benefit when they follow some of these.. Great post talking on Tradition.

  10. I believe in having at least one meal together as a family. But yes, many days this won’t be possible. But now, with nuclear families, this is sadly a long forgotten tradition.

  11. A family that plays together, eats together, stays together. My dad believed in this and we all ate together, trying to follow in his footsteps now with my family. Lovely post.

  12. Shilpa,

It is only in the fag end of life when one is down the memory lane that one realizes the importance of such romantic traditions which keep marriage fresh all the time.

    Take care

  13. It’s fun creating traditions with loved ones. My hubby and I take a bath together nearly every evening before dinner. We catch up on each other’s day and our little tradition is to wash each other’s feet!
