What Did You Learn Today?

cooltext1740614227

As parents, the first question that we asked our children as soon as they returned back from their school must have been “What did you learn in school today?”  This would have continued until their  primary school.

As they grew older, we rarely asked this question, though they were learning new lessons everyday. In fact , we never ask ourselves the lessons life has been teaching us all these years. And this is when learning never stops and there’s no better teacher than life itself. In fact, it is the best teacher. live-and-learn

Unlike school, where we are taught a lesson and then given a test, in life, we are given a test that teaches us a lesson. I believe  they call them “life lessons” for a reason. We need to experience life in order to learn the lessons. And the more life we experience, the more lessons we learn.

For each one of us, life does not follow a fixed pattern. It is like a sea, with its waves and currents that are ever changing and  that keeps changing its paths and destinations. With each new path and each new journey, the lessons it teaches are immense and diverse for one and all. Of course, we can learn from the experiences of others too.

“What have I learned?”, this is one question that we must ask ourselves, everyday.

For instance, today, I learnt that when you surround yourself with passionate people, your world changes. After all, it all begins and ends with passion. Passionate people believe and do the impossible. Their company lights you on fire and changes your reality! And am I glad that I met two such people today!!

This question, “What have I learned?” will help us to:

  • Evolve as better human beings.
  • Draw our learnings and lessons from everything that we experience.
  • Make the best of the tough times and grow from the trying experiences too.
  • Take the path of self-awareness and personal growth.
  • Focus on the positives which can be a big transformational aspect of our life.

So, what did you learn today?

  1. Great post Shilpa and I agree with you. Each day has to come with a learning and whether we learn from others or ourselves, we need to keep learning.
Sometimes we forget this important piece and this leads to a life that we cannot feel better about.

  2. Excellent Shilpa thank you. I will ask myself this question at the end of each day. Today I decided NOT to attend my usual alternate Monday night meeting (which I NEVER miss) because my brother and my son are visiting from various parts of the country and they are more important to me than a meeting.

  3. Today, I learned that my adult son may be seriously thinking of joining the military. I already know that all things change – and I wonder where this will end up leading our family.

  4. Though I don’t reflect upon life’s lessons on a daily basis, I do contemplate on the flow of situations at times. Certainly, every time, I see myself having evolved to a new something.

Lovely message Shilpa! Sometimes we need gentle reminders like this.

  5. Living life without learning is just existing, and that is no fun. So true Shilpa, you have to ask yourself each day. “What did I learn today?” and if your answer is nothing, then the day has been wasted. Such a brilliant post this is. And my answer to the question “I realised that I need to learn everyday, even a little lesson can sometimes be a life lesson.” 🙂

  6. So many things to learn every single day, isn’t it Shilpa?
of course, these days my little one teaches me everything 😛

  7. Your words are inspiring. I’ve taken some hard knocks along life’s path and each one has forced me to learn the lesson rather than be knocked down again. Today, I learned to start again–forget about past disturbances and carry on as if it never happened.

  8. This is the end of the day shilpa; I need to get back to kitchen and see what needs to be done, so what did I learn today? I learnt not to be quick to judge, but take time to understand, and once again learnt to let go of the past hurts.. to be happy and free..thanks for inspiring ! loved reading your post.

  9. I recently learned a few more CSS “tricks” while splitting my blog navigation bar into two! 😛
You’re right though… we never do stop learning in life… do we?

  10. When my son was at school, each day he would have to research any topic of his choice and then tell me one interesting fact. He learned to read well and both of us learned something new everyday.
