Neither of us ever expected that we’d meet at the Clock Tower on the sea front that day.

As you sat on a bench opposite mine, I glanced up at you momentarily from the book I was reading. And you looked up from your phone at the same moment too. Our eyes met for a minute longer than necessary, as they appeared to communicate more than a subtle curiosity.

As soon as I saw you, I knew I had known you before. And soon enough we got chatting, sharing, exchanging our life and its stories. It was such a meaningful encounter.

Although our respective worlds beckoned and we parted ways. But not before deciding to gift each other the joy of a beautiful relationship by meeting every year at the same day at the same place.

Today’s is that day again. And you have not turned up yet again.

It is easy to feel hurt or betrayed. But I am not going to get swayed by that nor will I look forward to any apologies or explanations or regrets.

I’ll be just like the sole witness of our meet-up, this Clock Tower and do what it does. Keep moving ahead.

  1. At first I thought it was a true story based on you and your husband, and then I wished it wasn’t true with the ending. Glad it was fiction! πŸ˜‰ However, this reminds me of a movie – forget the name right now – where a similar scene occurred. It was a sad ending to say the least. <3

    1. I Googled for a movie with this theme and it suggests that Same Time, Next Year has a similar story line. Did you mean this one, Elly?

  2. This is so beautiful and it reminded me of the story ‘An Affair to remember’, starring Cary Grant. I think it was remade as ‘Mann’ in Hindi. How sweet of one person to wait interminably year after year. Heartbreaking though πŸ™

    1. I guess, it sounds romantic at the end of it but must be tough for the person to endure this never-ending wait! πŸ™

  3. How amazing that they would meet at the same spot each year. It makes me wonder why the person didn’t come. Did they die? Intriguing story!

    1. I know what you mean, it indeed sounds so wonderful! I dont think he died. He must have his reasons for not keeping his part of the promise!
