Books & I… A Book Lover’s Tag #WriteBravely

Book

I found A Book Lover’s Tag on Myths of the Mirror. There’s nothing like chatting about books and reading habits. I can talk about books till cows come home. I can see that you’re interested too, right?

So without further ado, let’s get started with the Q & A session which is all about books.

1.Do you have a specific place for reading?

I don’t have a specific place to read, though I do have a favorite. I read when alone at a restaurant, while waiting somewhere, in train or a flight…

My favorite place to read is in bed and that makes me a Librocubicultarist.

2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?

Bookmarks definitely. I have a whole lot of them, thanks to online book shopping stores. Though sometimes boarding passes, bills etc are also seen in my books.

3. Do you eat or drink whilst reading? SAVE_20171024_093326

Yes. It is easy to eat and drink with Kindle. It can lie on the table while you eat or drink. Eating with a physical book is difficult and I hate spoiling it with stains.

4. Music or TV whilst reading.

None. I like absolute peace and quiet when I am reading. However, I have got used to the TV being on in the background when I am reading and can cope with that but not if it is too loud and that’s because the boys have only TV on their agenda when they are free and relaxing.

5. One book at a time or several?

A thriller or an interesting book is usually one at a time. But sometimes depending on the genre of the book, I do read multiple books. For example, I am currently reading Eats, Shoots & Leaves, a non-fiction on punctuation, which gets a bit overwhelming when I am reading it at a stretch; Enid Blyton’s Malory Towers, which is a bit slow for me and a Calvin and Hobbes comic which I am reading on my Kindle for PC.

6. Do you prefer to read at home or elsewhere?

I love reading at home in my bed, but I read anywhere. If it was only place to read for me, I’d barely finish a book.

7. Read out loud or silently?

Silently always, though it’s pretty loud in my head.

8. Do you read ahead or skip pages?

Usually, I read page by page unless a part of the chapter really drags. In such a case, I flick through the pages that follow until the story picks up again. I am guilty of reading the last page (and then going back) when it gets too much to handle especially in a thriller. IMG_20171003_101122_658

9. Break the spine or keep it like new.

Oh, I can never spoil my books and they look as good as new even after I have read them.

10. Do you write in books?

God! No! Never! Who does that??

11. What books are you reading now?

On my current reading list are

  • Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation is a non-fiction book by Lynne Truss
  • Malory Towers Collection 1: Books 1-3 by Enid Blyton
  • Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons (Calvin and Hobbes) by Bill Watterson
  • The Diaries of Adam and Eve by Mark Twain

12. What is your childhood favorite book?

Nancy Drew mystery stories by Calolyn Keene.

13. What is your all-time favorite book?

This is a tough question as my favorites have changed over a period of time. But if I have to pick one, it would be Sidney Sheldon’s Master of the Game. As a teenager, it was my first Sidney Sheldon book. The romance, drama, dark secrets, murders, lust, greed fascinated and intrigued me.  It was a big fat book and when I finished reading it, I remember having separation anxiety. I am thinking of re-reading it again.

That’s it for now! You can share your thoughts about my answers in the comments, or take up this book tag yourself – let me know if you do.

Happy reading and book tagging!

    1. Aha! That’s so good to know, Lata!
Ah! I read the last page only in thrillers when it gets too stressful to handle and it isnt the norm 😀

  1. I prefer silence while reading but that’s not always possible since I too read everywhere! No broken spines for me either. I treasure my books. What’s challenging for me is reading along and discovering it’s a horrible book. Do I muddle thru or toss it. I’ve done both.

    1. Ah! I know the dilemma of dealing with horrible books. Earlier, I would read through despite not liking it, but now I chuck it away for I have to read a LOT of good books. 🙂

  2. Answer number 10 yeah who does that. I love silence too when reading. Just the words ringing loud in my head. Books are so therapeutic… A good story makes one forget all the worries of the world.

    1. No, people scribble in books. Have seen quite a few people writing meanings or underlining interesting parts or doodling or writing names all over!!
Oh yes, books are a blessing. I love books that grab you right from the first page and won’t let go until the very last one.

    1. Thanks Tarand. Do take up this tag and would love to read your answers 🙂
I think those who want to get the sound of a word or understand the meaning better read aloud 😀

  3. Loved this post, Shilpa. I read one book at a time, and usually not while eating or drinking. If I have a choice, then, I’d prefer pin-drop silence and always have a bookmark coz I have them around everywhere I read, which is basically in every room! 😀 No matter how curious, I’d never read the last bits first…or break the spine! I treasure my books…they are my prized possessions.

Fav childhood book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and topping my all-time fav book(s) list is Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. There are way too many in that list. 🙂

    1. Aha! So good to know about your reading habits, Esha!
I read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in school, must pick it up again. And havent read Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak, will check it out!

  4. Loved the tag, and the answers, and have already taken it up at my blog too! 🙂 It was fun.

I’m assuming you bought the four Malory Towers series books at the recent Kindle sale? 🙂 40 each? I bought too, and read the first volume at once! Brought back memories of childhood and reading that series for the first time!

    1. Thanks for picking up this tag Vinay and yow know we have similar reading habits.
I bought Malory Towers Collection 1: Books 1-3 in May this year and it was for Rs 41!! Yes, I am re-reading it too, though am finding it a bit plain and slow now 😀

  5. I enjoyed reading your tag. It’s so fun to see how different everyone is… even reading through the comments brings a smile. It IS really hard to pick a favorite… but those standout books in our memories that hooked us and gave us “book hangovers” when they’re done, they are right up there. I’m so glad you took up the challenge. 😀

    1. Yes, we have different reading habits.
I love books which give hangovers especially the ones that are so good that you don’t know how to move on from it.
Thanks to you, I got to know of this interesting tag 🙂

  6. Woah!! Your book love is so much visible in all your posts and social media feed. And this post just confirms that. I love reading but not very regular with books these days.
Writing in books is for sure a NO. But I like adding few beautiful bookmarks – different for each one 😉

    1. Thanks Dipika. I have always been a book lover but now I have become a book addict! 😀
I have tons of simple paper bookmarks but have been eyeing some creative and interesting bookmarks.

    1. LOL, I am the weirdest one… reading the last page… but that happens only in a select few thrillers 😀

  7. Most of our reading habts are pretty similar though I am not on kindle and found it cumberome while eating; Yeah I prefer the physical book for that.
Bookmarks , bills and anything at all can serve to mark the page fo rme too.
Bed is the best place to read though I do mark out some of my fav passages in some of the books, esp self motivation ones!
I have tried reading 2-3 books at a time and just couldnt manage it!

    1. Interesting to know your reading habits, Shalini.
I took some time to warm up to Kindle, but now it’s my number one reading option. Try it sometime again, am sure you will love it too.

  8. Very engaging post, highlighting the slice of the “book lover” you, Shilpa!
Agree you that choosing the favourite book is so difficult. I feel by saying one as favourite, we do injustice to others. Coz all the books have a something or the other to offer which is unique.

    1. Thanks Anagha. Yes, picking favorites among books is tough, for each book leaves with you a different feeling, insight, learning etc!

  9. Woohoo….our reading habits are very similar. My first Sidney Sheldon book was ‘Tell Me your Dreams’ and it got me hooked!
Such an interesting post which made me re-fresh some good old memories, too 😀

    1. I have read Tell Me Your Dreams. In fact, I have read all books from Sidney Sheldon, including the recent ones with Tilly Bagshawe. Why dont you take up this tag, Meenakshi. Would love to read your answers!

  10. Shilpa, I guess all my habits match with yours. I am sure at any point in time if we meet, we will never be short of conversation. My teenage companions were Fear Street by R.L.Stine, Goosebumps, Nancy Drew and some of Sidney Sheldon too.

    1. That’s what I like about book lovers, they always have so much to talk and discuss. Would love to meet you over coffee and books, Geethica. 🙂

      1. Aha! You are a Kindle convert too. While I took time to warm up to Kindle but now I cant do without my Kindle. I am reading more and faster too! And while eating, it is tough to manage a physical book but with Kindle it is all sorted!! 🙂

    1. Oh, you must, Sanch. I am a total Kindle convert. I love reading on it. And please do take up this tag, would love to read your answers.

    1. I am planning re-read Sidney Sheldon too, because most of his book, were read during college time. And it’s been ages now…

  11. I loved Eats, Shoots, and Leaves! I think it was the first gammar-type book I ever read. I tend to read more than one book at a time, but no more than one fiction book at a time.

    1. Eats, Shoots and Leaves, though is a non-fiction but written in such a fun and interesting way. I love the examples shared in this book. Yes, fiction is usually one, but non-fiction can be 2 at a time for me too!

  12. This was fabulous Shilpa. I love to read books in my bed or on travel or just about anywhere where I have time and some peace and quiet. Your Sidney Sheldon memory reminds me of my own brush with his books. The first one that I read was Rage of Angels. I was hooked and how! I think I’ve read all his books though the latest ones seem repetitive. The initial ones were masterpieces.

    1. Agree with you, Rachna. Sidney Sheldon’s earlier books were truly thrilling and captivating reads. The ones with Tilly Bagshawe are not at par but interesting, nevertheless.

  13. I loved Nancy Drew as a child. I think of major pieces of literature as world renowned but am delighted that we shared the same childhood favorite or two different continents.

    1. How wonderful is that, Heidi. It’s so good to know that Nancy Drew was a part of your growing up years too!! Books certainly connect the readers from all over the world in different and amazing ways. 🙂

  14. Your reading passion is clearly visible in the post. I do like reading but lately my younger one keeps me busy and takes my book away. Yes even I like to read in silence and yes book marks are special and sometimes I try to make them too.
    Loved your collection.

    Cheers

    1. Reading is a big time passion for me. I know, with small kids, it’s challenging to find time for yourself. Wow, you make bookmarks… would love to see your creations 🙂
