If We Were Having Coffee… 4th December

COFFEE CHATS

If we were having coffee, I’d greet you with a hug and thank you for joining me on this cold December morning. I’d ask you to take a seat and grab a coffee of your choice and let’s catch up.

If we were having coffee, I’d ask you if you also find it incredulous that it’s December already!! I have a hard time believing this. Where did the year fly by?! But on the other hand, I have been really looking forward to December. Yes, Aaryan came back from his boarding school on 1st for this three month winter vacation.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that since the last 4 days, my schedule has gone for a toss. I am spending a lot of time in kitchen, of course sonny boy is helping me out and is my sous chef. Even before the first meal of the day is done with, we are planning for the second meal and the in-between meals too. So there’s a lot of cooking with chatting happening in our kitchen.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that Aaryan and I are on a TV watching spree. We watched Schindler’s List, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Rock On 2, The Shallows and re-runs of The Big Bang Theory and F.R.I.E.N.D.S.  which is fun always.

If we were having coffee, I’d share with you that recently, I bought Amazon Fire Stick to watch the popular series on Netflix. We watched 2 episodes of Narcos which is about the criminal exploits of Colombian drug kingpins and first episode of Breaking Bad which is about a chemistry teacher who discovers that he has cancer and decides to get into the meth-making business to repay his medical debts. Though both the series are pretty interesting and gripping, they had quite a out-of-the-blue explicit raunchy scenes which I certainly wouldn’t want to watch with my teen. Spending some quality time together turned truly awkward. Gosh!!  Can you suggest any family-teen friendly series on Netflix?

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I have not read a single word since the last 4 days and that’s bugging me a bit. I still have a lot to read in order to complete my 2017 Reading Challenges. I hope, I am able to manage my time better from whatever is left after all chores, cooking and connecting with Aaryan.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that during my last trip to Aligarh, I squeezed in a few hours to travel to Khurja. Khurja is some 50 kms from Aligarh and is the ceramics and pottery city. I have been eyeing ceramics from this city for long and I grabbed the opportunity. I bought some lovely mugs and cups, platters and trays at dirt cheap rates. I am so loving my loot. I cant wait to travel to this small city again. Incidentally, I didn’t get to buy locks from Aligarh though I lost the one for my bag there!

If we were having coffee, I’d take your leave, for the kitchen beckons me, again!! Here’s wishing you a fabulous week and see you soon again! Take care!

  1. Glad you are having fun. Narcos and BB are not for watching with kids. Watch The Crown if you haven’t. I loved it.
I’m off coffee and tea but this was a lovely read.

    1. Yeah, it’s good to have the sonny boy back.
Aah! Wish I had known that earlier. I watched another episode of BB on laptop, though it is a great story but it is certainly for kids 🙁 Thanks for joining me for this coffee (oh you can have anything of your choice!), good to see you here, Alka. 🙂

  2. Such a perfect read for a cold afternoon. Three whole months of having Aaryan home must be fabulous. It’s cute to imagine both of you chatting and cooking together. I love Khurja Pottery. Show us some pics please.

    1. Yes, it’s good to have him at home. Home is once again lively and… home!! Aaryan loves cooking just like his dad, so he is a big support in the kitchen and of course it’s a great time to chat and catch up with him. Khurja pottery is amazing, isnt it… will share my stuff 🙂

  3. It’s been a while since I was on Netflix… Probably Twilight Zone and Outerlimits. X Files if they’re there, although they were absolutely better and less soapy the first few seasons.

  4. Spending some quality time with the kids always feels good. I am at my wits end as to what to watch safely with both kids at the same time, one quite mature, the other in teens. Firestick is something I am still contemplating. You went to Khurja!! Love the pottery. Hope to see pics of your loot soon.

    1. Aah! You face the same diIemma, Kala! I bought Firestick after I heard some friends talk about the various series on Netflix. Didnt realize that these series would be not fit for teenage viewing. 😐
Khurja pottery is simply awesome… such huge variety and so pretty. Will share my loot sometimes soon!

  5. Three months sounds wonderful. But Narcos and BB are complete misfits to be watched with kids. Most English series are. It was interesting to hear about Khurja. You really get to travel to so many places on work.

    1. It’s good to have him home for a while.
Wish I had known earlier about these series. 🙁
Khurja is awesome. Oh, I so want to go to there again. I had to travel back by bus, so just got 1 carton of stuff. Yes, my work has taken me all over the country!! Thankful for that!!

  6. schindler’s list and boy in the striped pyjama… damn, you people be so serious!!

As for teen friendly netflix shows, look out for –
(comedy) Arrested Development, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
(Marvel) Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones
    (sci-fi) Stranger Things

    1. LOL 😀 No, the idea is to tick off the good movies from the Must See list!
Thanks a lot for sharing these series, Roshan. Will check them out.

  7. Wow.. That’s so great. I haven’t watched breaking bad though I have all the seasons with me. And aligned crockery? Share the pics with us. Would love to see. Happy December, Shilpa.

    1. I think BB seems to be a great series. I have watched 2 episodes, and the story line is interesting. Do check it out.
Will share my cups and mugs from Khurha soon.
Thank you and a very happy December to you too, Shalini!

  8. It must be an awesome feeling spending such quality time with your son! Great! Enjoy every moment, Shilpa! And, next time some adult scene flashes on the screen, just ask sonny boy to go fetch you a glass of water! Hehehe…just kidding! He is a big kid, I guess, and will have a hearty laugh at your expense! Or, he might ask you to go fetch him a glass of water! You never know kids!! LOL!
Do share the pictures of your Aligarh loot!

    1. Thanks, Shilpa. It’s good to have him home.
LOL @ your suggestion. Will share the Khurja loot pics soon. 🙂

    1. We made Pao Bhaji today and it tasted absolutely yum. Yesterday, we had methi paranthas, home made pizzas and cauliflower with chapati. Come over and I’ll make something for you too 🙂

  9. It sounds like you’re having such a nice time with your son! Chatting while cooking is always a favorite time for me with my kids, even though our kitchen is small and hard to function in with more than one person. It’s still worth the effort.

  10. Planning for the next meal while having a meal is a familiar story! It was great fun as a child but not as a mum 😉 And so is watching risque TV scenes 😀 My son holds the remote and is a bit of a prude – he invariably switches channels at slightest sign of any hanky panky and never fails to amuse me 😀 Thanks for the lovely coffee 🙂

  11. Enjoy the time with sonny boy! And fire stick, yay!!! Ahem we usually watch safest of stuff with Gy after we check the rating. That usually displays in the series info on the home screen. Check that next time.

    Happy December, Shilpa!

  12. Wow… Have a great time with the kiddo.
I remember how mom would use every ounce of her energy when I’d go home, cooking, talking… Memories to be treasured forever..
I read your posts and my coffee bug bites me..
*gets up to get a cuppa*
And yes, do share the pictures of your new crockery..
I love them and buy them wherever and whenever I can 🙂

  13. Looks like you are having a lot of fun and quality time with sonny. Wow.. I would love to have a three month winter vacation right now. Your mentioning the pottery and ceramics scene is mouth-watering. I will look forward to the pictures of the same.. This coffee is warm and sweet.

  14. Wow Shilpa thats so nice to hear, spending time with your son, enjoying and having lots of fun. If I was having coffee with you, I will tell you that its so cold here in hyderabad, and there has been a suicide in one of the hostel here; a 21 year old first year Msc student ended his life due to fears and insecurity, there is also suspicion as he is a topper and the body is gone for postmortem and meanwhile there was a bandh yesterday and today too there was a rally, I am in the counseling room as its a service we cannot close down. I was glad to meet a student who was frightened of what has happened and come to our centre to deal with his fears and low motivation.

  15. Good to know about you while having coffee. I couldn’t stop myself from preparing my hot cup of coffee before reading it. Lot of things are here to relate with, specially the kitchen part… Wishing you a wonderful vacation with your son. Best wishes!

  16. Hi Shilpa, I hope you remember me ! How did I miss coming here all the while and its so good to see that you have not lost grip the entire year.. from our blog marathon in last november.. it’s already a year!! unbelievable!
I am so looking forward to a blog marathon to make my rusted brain work some and write something on my blog which is gathering dust…
thanks for being such an inspiraiton

  17. What a heart-warning post Shilpa. I so enjoyed reading it. You seem to be having a lovely time with your teen except that one off faux pas, but then those mishaps happen.
Hope you stay warm and have a lovely rest of the December. Thank you for this lovely post.

  18. I am yet to watch Rock On 2 and this year my reading challenge gone for a toss. So reading at my own leisure and pace. Time flies like anything and it’s unbelievable how days are disappearing so fast.

  19. So nice to have your (not any more) baby home for the hols.
Kids are surprisingly resilient and survive our craziness, but I can imagine your embarrassment. 😉
Can you believe I didn’t know Khurja existed, and now I want to go off there to see and buy ceramics!
