Get it Right the First Time

Some people simply have jobs, while others have careers. Though, these two terms  ie  ‘career’ and ‘job’ are often used interchangeably, they aren’t the same. A career, is an occupation that lasts a long time, usually years or even decades, while a job is any employment that is paid. A career is made up of a job or jobs, but that doesn’t mean that every job is part of a person’s career.

With a career, the kind of work you do is based on your interests. It’s a path you’ve chosen.

Usually, after college students follow career paths they had never imagined for themselves or weren’t even aware of. It was the same for me. I remember, when I completed my MBA, some two decades ago, I just wanted a job and didn’t had a career in mind. The first job I got was in pharmaceutical industry. Thankfully, I liked what I did and later made it as my career.

But that was ages ago. It’s all different, now. Today, if you have a dream job in mind, then you can start on your career by finding a job that will allow you to work towards that dream job pretty early. Yes, that’s getting it right the first time!

Career planning and looking for various options in a chosen career should start when one is in school/college. The first step to finding potential careers is to do a complete self-assessment. What do you like to do?  What are your interests and abilities?

Today, we have so many tools and websites that help the students to find out what type of education is required for a particular career. They can find schools/colleges that may meet their needs. You can search for colleges based on their type, location, and degrees and programs/majors offered. For instance, if you are planning to choose the field of medicine as your career path, all you have to do is check out the various Medical Colleges in India. On a click of a button, you can get all the info that you require, right from the courses the Colleges offer to the cut-offs, admission process, eligibility, fee structure, infrastructure, facilities, placements etc.

Now-a-days, the career choices for Indian Doctors are immense. This is one recession proof profession and professionals in this field are always in demand, especially now with growing health awareness amongst people. The medical industry is growing by leaps and bound and so is the demand for skilled specialists. Today we have specialists in medical field which were not so popular few years ago viz Aerospace Medicine, Bioinformatics, Cardiac Anaesthesiology, Child Psychiatry, Forensic, Immunohematology Nuclear Medicine etc.

So go on and make a great career in this field which will not only give you the happiness of saving lives but also will give you great satisfaction.

Need for Speed

We live in a fast paced world . We like speed in everything.  We are so used to speed around us that slow drivers on the road, slow billing lines in the super market, slow learners, slow internet… they all drive us crazy!

Of all the slow things, nothing is more frustrating than a slow internet! In fact, slow internet is worse than no internet. 2015-08-20_22h30_38

How many times it has happened that the webpage you so desperately want to check will just not load. All you will see is an hour glass timer spinning for an indefinite period of time or the loading circle just continuing to rotate which means that the page is loading. But the webpage would just not load, no matter how many times you stab the refresh button!

Or you want to download a song or an app, and the message you will get is “63 hours 37 minutes remaining”!!

Being connected with the world has become a necessity. So, when emails continue to lie in the outbox or pictures/status updates  fail to get uploaded on Facebook or tweets refuse to fly to the Twitter land or a whatsapp messages refuse to get downloaded, it is so infuriating and is a true test of your patience.

But not anymore. Airtel has rolled out 4G services, nationwide across 296 cities . It is introduced specifically to handle mobile internet and data more efficiently, allowing faster and more reliable mobile connectivity.

If  I have access to such unbelievable speed, OMG!… what would I do… I think apart from dying of happiness, high speed internet would mean that…

Downloads would be a breeze. There would be no dozing off while looking at the screen as songs, games or videos or apps gets downloaded,  because all the downloads and even uploads would happen in a matter of few seconds and at a much faster rate than ever before.

Entertainment on the go. Live TV or videos could be enjoyed without the irritating buffering, anytime, anywhere! Aur Dikhao… Aur Dikhao… button would spoil us for choices as one browses through the various pages of the online shopping portal.

Conversations would flow effortlessly. Face to face conversations across the miles would not encounter the issues of stuttering, blurry or frozen images. There would be no time-lags and delays and no waiting for a few seconds before the other person speaks. One could talk for hours without getting disconnected or disturbed.

Gaming would be fun. When playing online games, due to poor speed, the pings could be really low, along with huge lag spikes and one often gets disconnected from the steam all together. This can be so frustrating and kill the joy of playing a good game. But with high speed, playing online with multiple players would be so exciting and fun.

Remote working. High speed internet would enable the use of a wider range of applications that will stimulate more efficient ways of working, such as allowing people to work remotely and exploit cloud services via their mobile devices.

It is time to join the Airtel 4G revolution and all one needs is a smartphone that is configured to work with a 4G network, a 4G sim and 4G plan which is available at 3G prices.

Given the pace of our life, we have a need for speed. So, it makes sense to get the advantage of faster, superior and uninterrupted connectivity with Airtel 4G. I am going for it! Are you?

A Woman’s Best Friend

I love accessories. I’m a girl. I love shoes. I love handbags. Petra Ecclestone

No look is complete without accessories. A handbag is arguably the most important accessory for a woman. It’s her best friend. It is her saviour at times. She carries the world inside it! And most importantly, they also help her make a personal style and fashion statement. A handbag, today is not used just a functional and a practical thing to carry the wallet, keys, phone, and make-up accessories. But it is used in making a personal statement and even as a status symbol. Remember the buzz Hina Rabbani Khar’s Birkin made when she was in India!

Handbags are used by women on daily basis and are also sometimes switched throughout multiple occasions. This absolute essential accessory comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, styles, colours and fabrics. A single style of bag is not adequate for the different styles of dresses we have in our wardrobes. Also, one bag is not suitable for the various occasions. We have one for each occasion, either it’s party, travel or business.

Here’s my list of absolute favourite and must-own handbags for every fashion conscious woman, which by the way are available at Limeroad.

Everyday Purse : This is the first must-have bag. A bag that is ideal for going to work or for grocery shopping or just about anything. It contains everything that one may need – phone, money, cosmetic and beauty accessories, sunglasses, book or a kindle, keys, notepad, pen, documents and your personal bits and pieces… Having all these little things is very comforting. Isn’t it? It gives us the feeling of being prepared for anything that the day might bring! It is usually with lots of pockets and compartments, so that all the essentials fit in well. This is one bag that is used the mostest. So, neutral colours like black, brown or navy blue are most suitable. Also it should go with all the dresses in the wardrobe.

Clutch : A clutch works well for a casual and chic look. It is best for a evening party as well as for a date and even for a wedding. It goes well with a saree and even with an evening gown. It isn’t a big bag but should be big enough to carry MILK. Yes, that’s Money and Mobile, ID, Lipstick and Keys. It can be in neutral colours or something with glitter, flashy metals, sequins or shimmer. Click here to check out the various Fashion Accessories online in India.

Tote Bag : Tote bag is a classic bag that can never go out of style. It is ideal for beach, weekend trips or shopping. It can be carried to college with casual jeans and t-shirt look or to work, with an all-formal look. Tote bags are big, so everything gets thrown into it easily and if in canvas or cloth, they can be thrown even for a wash. When over the shoulder, tote bags usually fall around elbow length. Spacious and comfortable, a tote bag is a suitable option with almost every attire. The best part about this bag is the variety that is offered. The different textures and colours  make them attractive and exclusive.

Satchel Sling Bag : This is the perfect combination of style and function. It can hold a book , laptop or any other day to day items with style. It is a bag with long sling/strap and is worn on one shoulder with the strap winding around the chest. It is often called cross-body bags because of how it is worn. This bag is apt to go with any casual attire.

pri_225-1417271511

Wristlet : A wristlet is a small handbag with a short carrying strap resembling bracelet and it can be worn around the wrist. It holds very little – usually less than a wallet. It keeps all the valuables really close at hand and is convenient and stylish at the same time!

std_1-1398246369

Weekender : The weekender handbags are a must have bag type for the women who are on the move. It is ideal for weekend get-aways. It is a large bag, which can carry almost everything one needs no matter the occasion. It is sometimes used as gym bag, diaper-bag, duffel bag, backpack for hiking, camping, travelling and sometimes the carry-on bag.

Which is your favourite handbag? How do you perceive your handbag? Is it basic and functional, personal style statement, fashion accessory, status symbol? Or all?

Ways to Maintain Furniture

A home without furniture is incomplete. In fact, furniture is the first thing that we buy when we move in a house. After all, it provides us with a place to sit and relax, eat and sleep, work and enjoy… Our furniture takes up the majority of space and helps make our home feel lived in, welcoming and complete. And the best is that all this is #JustAClickAway.

Whether the furniture in our home is there for its functionality and/or beauty, it has to be maintained. After all, furniture is meant to be used and enjoyed.

Sharing today some of the ways to maintain furniture at home.

  • Leather Sofas and Upholstery : Leather sofas add a touch of glamour and elegance to our home décor. However, cleaning and maintaining these stylish and plush sofas can be quite a challenge, as we cannot just wipe them down with a wet cloth and they can be easily damaged by improper cleaning techniques. Every now and then, we must follow the tips given below to give a long and a clean life to the leather sofas :Durian Concord
    • Vacuum clean the sofa by using the soft brush attachment. Let the crevice tool attachment suck up the dust and dirt from all the crevices and seams.
    • Make a cleaning solution by mixing equal parts of water and white vinegar. You can also use  commercial leather cleaner.
    • Dip a soft cloth (a microfiber cloth is best) in this solution and wring it out so that the cloth is just damp and not wet.
    • Wipe the entire sofa with this cloth while rinsing the cloth in the cleaning solution when necessary. It is best to start cleaning from the top and work your way down.
    • Dry the sofa with a clean cloth.
    • For conditioning, mix one part of white vinegar and two parts of linseed oil or flax seed oil. Using a soft, clean cloth, apply this mixture on the sofa in broad, circular motions. Leave it on overnight.
    • Next day, buff the sofa with a clean cloth to restore its shine.
  • Wooden Furniture : Wooden furniture is most preferred for its beauty, durability, and workability. Right from utilitarian furniture like the dining table and bedroom sets to the ones that have aesthetic appeal like side/coffee tables to even the ones which have symbolic or emotional appeal like the storage chests, wooden furniture is part of our every day life. Whatever their nature or purpose, wooden furniture needs our care and maintenance too. Here are some of the ways to manage our wood furniture :

Durian Krish Bedroom Set

    • Wood furniture can be cleaned with warm water and mild dish soap. Yes, it is perfectly ok to clean furniture with water as long as you don’t soak it with water! Wipe the dirt off the surface with soft cloth or paper towels. Then dry off any residual moisture with another dry soft cloth.
    • Frequent dusting removes dirt before it has a chance to settle in and make itself at home. Dusting often keeps an oily build-up from forming on wood furniture.
    • Keeping the wooden furniture out of the sun helps it from fading and destroying over time. The sun’s heat may also dry out and shrink the wood, which will cause cracks.
    • Similarly, avoid placing wood furniture near heating units or vents. Dry heat will cause the wood to dry and shrink, leaving cracks.
    • For a quick-fix touch up, use the appropriate color shoe polish on scratches and chips, especially to make them less visible. Carefully using a matching-color felt-tip marker first will hide it even better.
  • Upholstered Furniture : Upholstered furniture is not only trendy but also has a great aesthetic appeal. It can be customised with endless options depending on our taste and preferences. But with time, fabric upholstery picks up grease and grime and starts to look dull and tired. We can reduce the amount of damage to these soft furnishings by taking a few simple precautions :

Durian Oakland

    • Vacuum the upholstered furniture daily/weekly for general cleaning. This also prevents dirt from becoming embedded into the fabric fibres. You can also use a brush to gently whisk the dirt away. Of course, use a soft bristled brush so that you don’t snag the fabric.
    • Arm caps and covers help to protect from soiling the arm rests from body oil/sweat.
    • Some seats get more usage than others. It is a good idea to keep rotating seat cushions frequently to prolong life and appearance of areas prone to wear and tear. Changing the cushions around from one part to the other will ensure even usage.
    • Depending upon the fabric label, wash or dry-clean the fabric upholstery from time to time.
    • Avoid direct sunlight as it can cause the fabric to fade and even fray. Proper ventilation can help protect from fumes from cooking or smoke which can also harm the upholstery fabric.
    • It is best to have a professional clean your upholstered furniture every couple of years for it shine in its original glory.

By adopting simple practices regarding the use, care, and maintenance of  our furniture, we can make it look as good as new for years to come.

#ShareTheLoad

While women have achieved remarkable success in entering and conquering male dominated roles and jobs, we are still lagging when it comes to traditional gender roles in the home. Men may help around sometimes at home but it is women who still do the bulk of the housework. And we have data to prove that!

image

Yes, gender inequality in Indian homes is alive and kicking.

I believe, our household is pretty progressive. KG and I have split the work at home. The domestic chores at our home are not labelled as ‘His and Hers’. They are done as per the time availability, convenience and passion. I can watch my favourite movie on the television without worrying about the dinner or work on my presentation while KG irons the clothes for the next day. So, right from cooking, washing dishes, dusting to doing laundry, we do it without labelling it as one person’s domain chore. Of course, I have the upper hand in finding faults in his laundry and it is his prerogative to pick on the food that I cook.Laundry room rules

KG does laundry at home only when I am traveling for a week or more. And that’s because, the house looks like it is hit by a hurricane with clothes lying anywhere and everywhere (seeing that look of the home, brings out my OCD for cleaning the house big time and he hates my tired and haggard look at the end of the day!) or when he wants to wear his favourite shirt/tee which is lying in a heap of dirty laundry.

The cleanliness/orderliness freak in me hates his laundry for he has no patience to handle different clothes differently. The delicate and fine dresses and the sturdy jeans all get washed and tumbled dried together! Aarrgghh! I remember, a few months ago, he had ruined a whole lot of wash load because of the colour bleeding from one of the dining table mat. Double Aarrgghh!! So, one of my instructions before leaving for a tour is ‘Stay away from the washing machine!’

I read about the “Share the Load” campaign from Ariel, which is a call to action for people, men in particular, to share the burden of household chores. I thought that it was the best opportunity to share the tips and tricks of doing laundry with the man, when I am at home. And like always, he was a big sport!

As I gave a running commentary on how to sort the dirty clothes in different piles along with my expert comments from years of experience, to the amount of detergent to be added, the timer for washing and rinsing clothes, the man followed all the instructions to the tee.

He took the lessons pretty seriously just like his look in this pic. DSC_0227

Am I proud of him?! Totally! Completely! ♥

Hopefully, we will have sparkling clean and stain free clothes even when the washing machine is used in my absence!

I believe, gender equality just cant be enforced after marriage, it has to be inculcated from the childhood. I am glad that as parents, KG and I are teaching and fostering gender equality by example to our child.

KG took the #WashBucketChallenge and is inspired to #ShareTheLoad. Are you?

I nominate my friends to get any male member in their family, to pledge to #ShareTheLoad by taking the #WashBucketChallenge with Ariel India.

IIT Bombay : A Glimpse

Sometime ago, I had shared about a collegedunia.com, a search engine for the students, parents, and those in education industry, seeking information on higher education in India. In continuation to my earlier post, today I give a sneak peek about a premier institute of our country.

The IITs were built with a vision to provide technical personnel of international calibre, who would act as leaders in technology in independent India.

Established in 1958, the second of its kind, IIT Bombay is recognised worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research. Reputed for the outstanding calibre of students graduating from its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, the institute attracts the best students from the country for its bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Research and academic programmes at IIT Bombay are driven by an outstanding faculty, many of whom are reputed for their research contributions internationally.

Over the last five decades, more than 34,000 engineers and scientists have graduated from the institute. It is noted for its strong research groups in varied areas of science and technology that are making substantial contributions to national projects. Educational programmes here extend beyond the physical sciences and engineering into social sciences like English, Philosophy, Sociology, Economics and Psychology, including the recent School of Management

An island of dappled green, the campus at Powai is nestled amongst hills and flanked by the Powai and Vihar lakes. It is special both in terms of its physical beauty and location — a place where you could be away from the world, yet still be a part of it. Education and research are the twin pillars of this institute and the ambience is one in which new ideas and creativity can flourish.

IIT Bombay is academically organised into 14 Academic Departments, ten Centres, two Schools and three Interdisciplinary Programmes. On an average, it admits 650 candidates for the undergraduate programmes and 1,050 candidates for different Ph.D/Postgraduate programmes every year.

The institute provides the best, and it ensures that its students are also of exceptionally high quality. Admission to IIT Bombay is enabled through its various entrance examinations, like the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for the undergraduate programme, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for postgraduate programmes, the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED), MET for M.Phil, JMET for the Master of Management programme and JAM for M.Sc and M.Sc-Ph.D Dual Degree programmes.

One of the key goals of the institute is to provide an ambience in which higher studies and research thrives among the students and faculty. Along with fundamental research, many R&D projects offer opportunities to tackle ‘live’ problems. Its commitment to merge education with the creation of knowledge provides a fertile setting for productive research, which has led to a range of scientific and technological achievements.

To know more about IIT Bombay, check out the details at collegedunia.com.

Online Education Portal Raises Over $150K in Angel Funding

Delhi-based Collegedunia Web Pvt Ltd, which owns and operates the education portal CollegeduniaCollegedunia.com, has raised Rs 1 crore ($162,787) in angel funding from MIH-acquired automobile site Gaadi.com’s CEO Umang Kumar, along with a bunch of undisclosed investors.

The funds will be utilised in enhancing the technology, operations and for marketing.

Founded in May 2014, Collegedunia offers information about 700 colleges across the country. The information ranges from admission criteria and fee structure, faculty details to hostel fee. It is a comprehensive search engine for exams, colleges and courses.

The company is planning to add data on 7,000 to 8,000 colleges in six months. In the long run, the site will also look at listing coaching institutes, polytechnic institutes and entrance exams details. According to Sahil Chalana, founder, Collegedunia, it plans to become the Zomato of the education industry.

The start-up makes money from combination of listing and lead generation. Currently, it has 30 employees across technology, content, call centre and sales departments and plans to hire 40 more in six months. It claims to be attracting one lakh visitors per month and is hoping to increase this number to a million in six months.

How We Met

The College Years!! Those were the days… left the comforts of home for the first time.. made a group out of the first few people we met… hanging out together between classes… sitting together during lunch and dinners at the mess… staying up all night with a steady dose of tea and snacks to complete assignments. Complaining about anything and everything, learning to share opinions, discovering ourselves and forging some wonderful bonds….

And then life happened… new jobs, different cities/countries, marriage and then kids… The ‘nice and wild’ days were all left behind as we embraced the newer roles and challenges of life.

One fine day, out of the blue, years later, a mail in my inbox popped out. It was from a college friend from the distant past. The heart did a time travel across emails and then Facebook, on and off, for a good two decades. The mails saw us exchanging stories of our lives, marriages, kids, work, friends and experiences.

And then we happened to be in the same city at the same time. ‘Can we meet?’, the question popped up in one of our chats. Of course, we can and we must! And as the day came closer, anticipation was killing me. What if, he is not able to make it? What if, there’s an exigency? What-if… What-if…

Finally, the day arrived and I could barely contain my excitement. And thankfully, all went well for me, no exigency, no traffic jams and I reached before the scheduled time. As I sat by the window at the cafe, lost in some last minute anxiety-laced-thinking… ‘would it be awkward… after all we would be meeting after two decades?’…

Someone tapped me on the shoulder — I turned around and found myself looking at hisIt's Coffee twinkling eyes and a beaming smile. As I got up and extended my hand, he engulfed me in a big bear hug. Thoughts of awkwardness on meeting a friend after a long time simply vanished and as we sat drinking coffee and talking… Talking about mutual friends, remembering the nicknames we had given to professors and some friends and telling stories we had forgotten…

As we emptied our first cup of coffee, two excited voices broke our chain of conversation. We looked up and added more to the buzz around us. In front of us were two batch mates. Oblivious to the minor pandemonium that we were creating, we chatted animatedly. Remembering and sharing the inside jokes that still sounded sooo hilarious, re-living the memories of life at the campus…

We talked about how we had expected our life to be and how it played out for each one of us.  We shared so many stories that time simply flew by… so quickly!

We realized that though the greys and a few wrinkles, along with adipose layers at unflattering places had changed us physically but underneath we were still the same wonderful people who were friends decades ago.

Though, Facebook and Twitter had united us again but there’s nothing like meeting our friends in the real world. No matter how far we were all these years, we were able to pick up right where we left off… We all laughed so much that day and our happiness knew no bounds. The emotional connect cannot be replaced by the smileys on the internet chat and comments on Facebook posts. The bond is strengthened and deepened when we connect in the real world with real friends.

We realized that reunion reveals friendship potential that haven’t yet been emerged in the past.

It is true that good things happen when we get together! And this is reflected in Starbucks first ever brand campaign, ‘Meet me at Starbucks‘. This campaign encourages people to meet and experience genuine moments of connections.

Dettol Multi-Use Wipes : Review

I am a cleanliness freak. I wasn’t like this always. I don’t know when it happened but over the years, the general regular habit of having neat and clean things around somehow transformed into obsession. The plates and spoons at the restaurant have to be wiped clean, always. The serving spoons at the buffet have to be held with a napkin.  The hands need the mandatory wash before eating. The dust on the laptop or the hand prints on the dining table glass are never missed by my hawk eyes.

Thank God for the wet wipes which I carry in my bag all the time. Needless to say, that when I heard about Dettol Multi-Use Wipes, my cleanliness-obsessed head and heart did a little happy dance as Dettol is the name that is synonymous with hygiene and disinfectants. I used the Dettol Multi-Use Wipes in and around my home.

Dettol Multi-Use Wipes 1

  • During travel, a wet wipe helped to get rid of dust and grime on face, neck and hands and gave that fresh feeling. Dettol Multi-Use Wipes are alcohol free, and are gentle on the skin and I liked its pleasant fragrance too. The wipes are of a good size and thick and durable too.
  • Cleaning hands before eating in a restaurant and even wiping the not-so-clean table was easy.
  • Removing eyeliner and lipstick swatches on hand with Dettol Multi-Use Wipes was impressive. And this is considering that the eyeliner was smudge proof and doesn’t comes off easily. Also the emollients present in the wipes kept the skin moisturized.
  • Wiping dust and grime from gadgets like Laptop, TV Remote, Smartphone, Tablet was simple and effective. Dettol Multi-Use Wipes are sufficiently moist to give a thorough cleaning of these surfaces.
  • Cleaning kitchen granite countertop, laminate kitchen cabinets, microwave, refrigerator, food processor, glass table-tops and even sandwich maker ensures germ free surfaces. And keeping the door bell, the door handles, faucets bug free was never so easy.

The cleanliness freak in me is happy with Dettol Multi-Use Wipes because of following reasons:

  • Protection from a wide range of germs.
  • Since it is alcohol free and has moisturizers so it is gentle on skin.
  • The fresh fragrance is mild that lasts for a while.
  • Good size, thick and durable napkin ensures instant and thorough clean-up of all surfaces.
  • Convenient and easy to use wipes for fast and hygienic surface cleaning.
  • Each wipe is easy to pull out easily unlike some brands where two or more wipes end up coming out of the pack.
  • Re-sealable pack, prevents the wipes from drying out.

Dettol Multi-Use Wipes have a shelf life of 24 months and are available in packs of 10s (x3) and 30s and are priced and Rs 120 and 115 respectively!

Dettol Multi-Use Wipes provide protection from germs for both skin and surfaces, at home and on the go. Needless to say, that it is an integral part of my bag and I am going to keep one in our car too.

You can buy Dettol Multi-Use Wipes online on Flipkart.
