A Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose!

Things are as they are, not as they should be!

Commit To Be Fit

I was always very skeptical of joining a Gym. I don’t know why!!??

I believed swimming to be the best form of exercising. So, the body got its daily dose of exercise in summers courtesy a swim in the cool clear pool.

And would have continued to do so even in winters, but sadly we don’t have heated pools for the harsh winters here!

A few months of lethargy saw some subtle changes at some places and some not so subtle at other places, which needed to be rectified.

“Hit the Gym”, said the inner voice. And the inner voice was heard which was doubly encouraged by my Best Half, KG. It’s been more than a month since I started working out at the gym. And I am loving every moment of it. You ask, Why??

The reasons are many…

  • I like that feeling of commitment which I made to myself and my body to be fit. To commit is to pledge yourself to a certain purpose or line of conduct. And thus nothing deters me to go for that work out at 8 am of even the ultra cold foggy mornings.
  • Though the feeling to catch that extra sleep in the warm cozy bed is pretty overwhelming. But, have started firmly believing in the age old adage, “Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today”!!
  • I am meeting an altogether different set of like-minded people…all sweating it out to be fit and healthy! The motivation and encouragement makes your day. On the other hand, its humbling too. When somebody says, “Oh, I have been exercising, since the day I was born!”…it speaks volumes about their state of mind, their insecurities, their pain…
  • I am getting to watch all new music videos and sound tracks on the TV in the gym. And this is something new for me. Because the remote of the idiot box is dominated by the 2 men of the family and all I get to watch is Cartoon Network/Pogo or AXN/Star Movies/HBO et al…
  • Mirror, Mirror on the wall…tells you a lot!! Never before have I observed myself from so many angles for sooooo long!! Thank you, dear wall to wall mirrors!! Gosh, some new insights I have!
  • Life is truly made up of small pleasures and thus even miniscule achievements make you jump for joy!! That extra minute you walked on treadmill or the little higher calorie burned during an exercise than before or better stamina or a better fit of some dresses, all make you go that extra mile.

Regular exercise is good for health. A moderate amount of activity performed three to five days per week:

  • Improves health
  • Improves many health-related risk factors
  • Improves strength and feeling of well-being

I commit to be fit! Do You??

  1. Bravo Shilpa!! Keep it up! and I do … commit to be fit myself!! Like the resolve & the commitment considering it’s sooooooooooo very cold out there …commendable, indeed!!

    Cheers, anan

  2. Clap clap clap… apart from this i won’t comment anything and pretend this post does not exist.

    😛

I am allergic to removing sweat from my body artificially.

  3. Well summarized… Yes, even I had given up my regular work outs due to hectic schedule at work followed by exams.. Now that I got a breather, started working out again 🙂

I truly endorse the every statement you have made 🙂 That is the power of commitment to live healthy!

  4. I have been born lazy when it comes to excercising. My brother is exact opposite to me – Gets up @ 5, goes for jogging, follows it up by yoga (earlier he used to hit gym religiously). Though on and off I indulge in excercise it was never been consistent. This year I have restarted my Yoga and have decided to Jog too. Lets see how far it goes …

  5. What could be better than a happy new year? — A Healthy new year!!! 🙂

Anything requires commitment and perseverance. I’m sure you are an inspiration to others want to follow suit. Go Shilpa!! Great start really.

  6. Good going Shilpa!
I am a big fitness freak but I like to burn out by jogging and on my exercise bike at home.

    Good luck with everything 🙂

I know wall to wall mirrors in the gyms are meant to keep you motivated and you should just let them do that. Don’t worry and keep up the fabulous effort.

    Cheers!!

  7. All the best for the new venture.

I love to exercise but I hate gyms. I like to play instead or go for a long walk or a short run. If I am too busy do any of them: I use the fourth floor bathroom in my office (I sit in basement) which gives me quiet a bit of exercise during the day but no gym.. 😀

  8. Agree to the Mirror on the Wall concept ….but the problem is if ever you stop exercising …then same mirror becomes a real pain :D…. as for me I love working out specially when I know my body responds pretty well and love the envious looks of the fellow gym-ers but off late everytime I hit the Gym something happens to my health and I am put off completely….right now I would like to get back …lets see …

  9. @ Anan: Thanks a lot Anan, for the encouraging words!!

As such you are fit but a lil’ bit of exercise helps to be healthy.

A study published in the International Journal of Obesity, found that lean exercisers had good LDL levels, but those in lean and obese non-exercisers were higher and similar.

    So, you must exercise too!!

    Cheers to good health! 🙂

  10. @ SiD : Ha! ha!! And may be you would also like to say that, “Exercise is a dirty word. Every time I hear it, I wash my mouth out with chocolate!!” Right?? 😀

    @ evanescentthoughts : Thanks! 🙂

Oh, you also feel like Sid and Robert M. Hutchins, who said, “Whenever I feel like exercise, I lie down until the feeling passes”…lol 😀

  11. @ Mohan : Am glad you liked it. Yeah, it happens all the time, you have a busy schedule and exercising is the first thing that you quit! Glad that you are back to your work outs! 🙂

Cheers to a healthy life! 🙂

@ Madhu : Thank you Madhu. Right you are!! Because of our sedentary life styles, exercising is of paramount importance! And very much needed too!

I love swimming! It’s so much fun and refreshing!! Can’t wait for the summers to start!! 🙂

  12. @ Lakshmi Rajan : 😛

Yoga is an excellent form of exercise for the mind and spirit. Studies show that the benefits of yoga are more than the regular exercises and also it has better physiological, biochemical and psychological effect than exercises!

All the best for your resolutions!! 🙂

@ avdi : Oh, yes it is!!

  14. @ Chatterbox : Thanks a lot for encouraging words, CB! 🙂

That’s cool…We have a treadmill at home and it is highly underutilized. Had the josh to use it when it was new and sometimes when I get guilt pangs (of spending so much and not using it). Hopefully, with this regular gymming, will get the drive to use it too!! 🙂

  15. @ Richa : Thank you Richa!

That’s wonderful…Outdoor games are best form of exercise!! They say, an hour of basketball feels like 15 minutes. An hour on a treadmill feels like a weekend in traffic school. And taking the stairs..that too 4 floors…that’s the bestest!

    Great going! 🙂

  16. @ Dhiman : I know I know! 🙁

That’s so very nice, when you get results!! I believe, along with exercise, you need to have a balanced diet too!!Staying away from junk fried food or too much sweets helps too!

Take care and be fit and healthy! 🙂

  17. In times like this ,mirror is the best friend one has.
It is good to do whatever is necessary to remain in good shape and good health.
Only one suggestion-check with your physicians if there are any exercises you must not be doing—e.g Tread mill.
    Best of luck.

  18. in my case if once i hit the gym and do it dedicatedly for a week then its hard for me to stop… but if i do stop there its equally hard for me get back there… its great that u have kept the commitment, i just suggest dont stop… even if u feel u r back in shape…

    cheers to ur commitment!!!

  19. Hey “Staying away from junk fried food or too much sweets” well staying from Junk foods is fine but sweets for me is never ‘too much’ 😀

    Cheers to good health! 🙂

@ Dhiman : Same here!! Can’t do without the sweets! They are mandatory after every meal and can have them anytime too! :p

  21. Nice post!

There’s always this holy smugness around you when you walk out after the work-out in a gym. You almost feel sorry for the bulging slobs who’re up to no good!
