    Whispers in the Woods

Today was a relatively free day, so I thought, why not dust off the blog and shake out the cobwebs?

Writing has quietly slipped into the background lately. Life’s been moving fast, and somehow, the one thing that brings me calm kept getting pushed aside. But it’s always there, nudging me now and then. I miss the days when blogging was part of my rhythm, when sharing a story felt like a conversation with myself.

So when I came across this Creative Writing Challenge by Tolentino Teaching, I took it as a sign. The task was to use eight verbs… sparkle, dash, plop, jostle, lurk, rush, yank and zap. I added my own twist and wove them into a 55-word story.

    Felt good to write again.

    Fireflies sparkle as dusk falls.

Kids dash through the woods, laughing.

A frog plops into the pond.

    Shadows jostle between trees.

    Something seems to lurk nearby.

    They rush ahead, breath quickening.

    One yanks another’s sleeve…. look!

A sharp zap of wings, an owl takes flight.

    Silence.

    Then giggles.

    Just a grumpy owl.

    Childhood wins again.

    Shady Shadow

A contented sigh escaped her on seeing the husband appeasing their daughter.

How adorable they look, with him doing monkey tricks and she sitting stoically, she mused.

    The doorbell broke her reverie.

She dashed out with a kiss in their direction, oblivious to the panic-stricken child.

“Come to daddy!” he smiled as the door closed.

“Can’t you see?” She barked as he apologized and picked up her fallen bags.

Thinking him to be a homeless trouble-maker, she snatched her bags from him.

As she fumbled in her bag for the keys, he handed them to her.

    Sheepishly, she offered him money.

He said, “No, help someone with a kind word.”

Say hello to her manic morning.

She ducks into kitchen and bedrooms.

Loads the dishwasher, unloads the wash-load.

Removes wrinkles from clothes and frowning faces and finally hugs and kisses.

Determinedly she walks towards the balcony where a new adventure waits for her.

It’s time to nurture her soul with a book and hot tea.

I can sense their growing cynicism.

They nudge each other and point their fingers at me.

My ears ring with their wicked laughter.

They mock and ridicule me over and over again.

    Yes, I am a little weird… a little different.

So what? Isn’t it better to be a nerd than one of the herd!

They stare when I’m not looking and look away when I am.

Shades of pity, fear, inquisitiveness and compassion show in their eyes.

Some want to talk to me but then their courage fails them.

My name is never called out.

To adopt a child with deformities probably needs a mighty miracle and nothing less.

He never liked kids. He never wanted kids.

    He preferred money and silence.

It was apparently an unpopular decision which distressed his wife the most.

    Then it happened, obviously accidentally.

Denial, anger, fear gave way to happiness when he saw that little beautiful baby.

He asked his wife for forgiveness and she wished for his.

“I never thought it’d happen. We’d a good run for many years. I think my feelings have changed or maybe they’ve been re-arranged. You may call it the seven-year itch. But it’s goodbye,” she kept the HP books on the shelf and wondered when she’d find a new series to fall in love with again.
