Her divorce was a success, they said. Failure would have been staying married to him when there was no love and compatibility.

Divorce is the start point for a brand new life. It’s the chance to redesign her dreams, they suggested and preached.

She could be happy again; she thought and bravely pulled herself together.

She joined the gym, enrolled in a baking course, adopted a puppy and even cut her hair.

This grisly charade could have fooled them but not her.

Because she still feels that hatred and loneliness and doesn’t know which is lesser of the two evils?

    1. Yes, the transition is never easy and one has to pick herself/himself up after the divorce. Thanks for dropping my Sitharaam!

    1. True that. Instead of supporting them, our society makes it difficult for the divorcees. Have seen a few friends go through challenging times post their divorce. But one should certainly not stay in a relationship that isnt working for them.

  1. Staying in an unhappy marriage is a huge strain on both people. And everyone deserves happiness. Divorce has a big stigma in India but elsewhere no one thinks lesser of divorced people.

    1. Agree with that. If you are in a miserable relationship, the best is to work on it and if that fails move out. Yes, while the divorce rate is on the rise in India, its acceptance in the society is still poor!

  2. Sometimes, taking a step back is always preferable instead of closing the eyes and ploughing forward. I like the way how her continuing inner turmoil is juxtaposed against her exterior changes. Nicely done, Shilpa

  3. Hoping happiness for her on her tough journey ahead. This was a step of bravery and more of it will be needed at every step!

  4. Oh how sad that she feels so.

I could so relate to this tale in first half as these were my thoughts and actions too. I wish I had had this support from peeps around me.

  5. I was excepting that turn around towards the climax. I guess in these times when the family and friends are ever supporting, its the internal demons one needs to fight,

  6. Your words express her deep pain so well.. the outer facade can fool everyone but not the person who is putting it on.. loved this one Shilpa

  7. Freedom does come at a cost. Its difficult to know which is better, a caged life or free yet lonely one. Two sides of the same coin.
Made me pause and ponder for a while Shilpa.

  8. The dilemma to choose one is always hard and challenging. Divorce brings ao many changes in one’s life so moving on and happily accepted and respected by the society adds up to that pressure. Sometimes social pressure makes things even more difficult.

  9. Wow! That’s a nice perspective. Divorce is usually seen as black and white, but others forget that there is a lot of grey the person endures.

  10. Divorce is always painful. It will be of more pain if kids are there. We are facing the pain at present with my brother’s marriage. Your posts reflects this pain so deeply.
