A Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose!

Things are as they are, not as they should be!

May Photo A Day : Day 17 : Season

It’s the Mango Season, here!!

Summer in India is synonymous with the mango season.

Come summers and all we see are the different varieties of mangoes in the market.

Don’t we all love mangoes! I am yet to meet somebody who doesn’t like mangoes.

That feeling when the teeth sink into the soft, sweet, juicy fruit can be described only as sheer bliss.

Tantalizing all the taste buds, luscious, succulent and sinfully delicious, mango is rightfully hailed as the king of fruits. I believe, a mango is best enjoyed when one is oblivious to the dripping juice or the mess!

Mangoes are not only available in several varieties but it can be consumed in various forms too. Kairi Paana from raw mangoes, the sweet or sweet/sour Jam and Chutney, Mango Shake, Flavoured Curd, Aam Ras, Mango Lassi, Salad, Pickles, Ice-creams, Tarts… the choices are endless. I have heard some people make a mango vegetable curry too.

Here are the mangoes and the its various formsΒ  (Kairi Paana, Sweet Jam, Sweet / Sour Chutney) from my kitchen today…DSC_0572

Which is your favorite mango variety / form / dish?

  1. Mmmm Mango, I just love it all its forms, be it pickles, jam or chutney or even sam-panna of the raw mango or the fruit, the sam-ras or milkshake…my mouth is watering just thinking of it, I miss the mango season the most now that I’m away from India… I wonder why they call this Khaas fruit Aam?? Imagine what Khaas would taste like if Aam tastes so divine…

    1. I like your thought process, Reshma… given that it has so many varieties, can be had in various forms, is loved by most, it should certainly be called Khaas fruit! πŸ˜€

  2. Yummmm…I love mangoes…but you see whatever i love is so caloric πŸ™

Btw …like the design on that mango slice πŸ™‚

    1. Oho Nivedita! You dont look at calories when you are eating a sinfully delicious fruit. Just enjoy the moment. Of course, jog, walk, swim later on πŸ˜€
Thanks, glad you liked the way it is cut… it is very simple πŸ™‚

  3. ooh! You made my mouth water! Just last year, we discovered Mexican mangoes which were as nice and khatta as ours! I dipped slices in salt and chillies till my teeth finally protested!

  4. Nice photograph of mangoes. The sliced one is very tempting.I love mangoes in any form.Surprised to see that there are people who do not relish mangoes.
BTW we make ripe mango curry, which is very delicious.

  5. awesome !
I love Kairi and Mango juice , shake or any thing but for some reason I dont like eating mango much specially the ras- aam . My hubby mad abt them but I dont like – strange na – Yes. In summer its a dialy routine for all at home and all cousiins who come in holidays. They used to skip lunches too but there I was not relishing it much . My mom used to make juice for me πŸ™‚

  6. Not a very crazy fan of Mangoes but I like Aamras. I love the Alphonso variety. The Aam panha looks delicious..feel like drinking it out of the screen..slurrp πŸ™‚

  7. I love mangoes and that is possibly the only reason I look forward to summers! I can have them any time of the day. Mom makes really yumm aam panna also.

But, that jam? Recipe please! Looks delicious!

  8. wow!! All in a day?? Hmm I used to be very fond of Mangos and then as a kid I once had many boils which were painful and after that I stopped eating M’s. I resumed eating them much much later. Even now I am not that very fond of them.

And seriously these days I can see nothing but M’s on all fruit carts!

  9. Mangoes increase the body heat a little. That’s the only issue here. Already it feels like 110 C with the deadly humidity. I wish mangoes were available during non-summers. I would relish them. I like both the fruit and raw mangoes πŸ™‚ Mango Lassi? We have not tried that one yet!!

    Destination Infinity

    1. Yeah, they do increase the body heat and some people get boils! πŸ™
Mango lassi, is good… if you have tried mango flavoured curd, it is like that only… may be a bit thicker in consistency!

    1. It is simple… first make cut marks in one direction and then in another direction such that diamonds are formed and then turn the slice a bit outwards… πŸ™‚

  10. I love mangos but the ones in our markets are rarely good. A few times a year, we get boxes of good cheap yellow mangos. My kids and I have smoothies and make mango salsa.

  11. Me too, love mangoes, but these days we are not getting sweet ones at all here in Bangalore, they are all very bland and tasteless. It has been ages since I had a really sweet mango. I love Chunda, and raw mango which we make into a sweet raita with Gud and green chillies. Nice picture.

    1. Wow! I have never tasted raw/ripe mango curries! πŸ™
Will check out some recipes and try it out this season πŸ™‚
Thanks, glad you liked the presentation πŸ™‚

  12. Right on all counts Shilpa. They are a favourite with all of us. When we were young all of us cousins would sit in vests and shorts around a bucket full of mangoes immersed in cold water (those were no fridge days) and eat to our hearts’ content. What fun days.

    1. It was exactly the same at our granny’s place too! During our summer vacations, in huge buckets, mangoes were immersed and were devoured every evening! πŸ™‚ Truly what fun days! πŸ™‚

  13. I’m drooling over all that lovely stuff on the plate!!!!!!!!!!! aam ka panna is my hot favorite ! aam ras (made by puree-ing ripe mangoes with a dash of sugar and elaichi) is also something i love with the puri…

  14. Mango any form..you ask me..I love it..I seriously miss our Indian mangoes…so whenever I come to India, the only time I plan to be there is summer. Mango, Mango milkshake, ice cream, cake..you name it…yummmmm πŸ™‚
