Gift a Life – Donate Organs

It is called the gift of life. No words can ever express gratitude for this selfless act of passing on the gift of life. It is the legacy that we can leave behind… a priceless treasure that would be cherished by receiver and his family and our loved ones too.

Yes, I am talking about Organ Donation.

August 13 is World Organ Donation Day. It is celebrated to promote organ donation for those who are in need of them.

Organ donation is the harvesting of an individual’s organs after he or she dies for the purpose of transplanting them into another person. The person who gives the organs is called a donor while a person who receives the organ is called a recipient.

Becoming an Organ Donor is a win-win situation for all. Here are some reasons why, we must opt for organ donation:

This one act of ours can help save lives and make a difference.

  • Experts say that the organs from one donor can save or help as many as 50 people!! Organs and tissues that we can can donate include kidneys, heart, liver, pancreas, intestines, lungs, skin, bone and bone marrow, cornea, heart valves and veins. Organs are used to save lives by replacing diseased organs with healthy ones. Corneas are transplanted to give sight and heart valves are used in valve replacement surgery. Skin grafts are used for burn victims. Bone, tendons and ligaments, veins can be used in reconstructive surgeries.

  • It can give a second chance at life to the organ recipients. For some, an organ transplant means no longer having to be dependent on costly routine treatments to survive.  It allows many recipients to return to a normal lifestyle and/or have a better quality of life.

  • Our own families may take comfort in the fact that their loss may help to save or improve the lives of others.

In 2013, I pledged to donate my organs. I have requested that after my death any part of my body be used for transplantation. I carry this card in my purse always. And my family knows about this wish of mine. I just hope that they do remember to carry out this wish at the right time.

They say in the midst of darkness, an enduring light shines strong and bright. It is the light of hope. So, give the gift of hope to someone. Gift a life to somebody. Be an Organ Donor.

Organ Donation… What do you think about it?

Everyone should write about it and spread the word… this cause must be taken up seriously… this is about saving many lives.

  2. Very nicely shared, Shilpa.
Nice to know that you have already enrolled for this noble cause.
I did this year & should receive my card. Even I’ll carry in in my purse at all times then.

  3. Agree, this is the least we can do for our fellow beings. Even I’ve pledged to donate my organs, and informed my family of my wish.

  4. well done!! I too have pledged to donate; it’s encripted in my driver’s license, so I’m hopeful that the procedure of getting my organs will be in time!

  5. Im proud to be one….registered myself on my birthday and now the feeling is that I must be more careful with my body because it longer belongs to just me….but it is definitely a feel good thing!

  6. Very true Shilpa.
We must donate whatever is useful after our death, and if due to some reasons our organs cannot be utilized, then we should donate our body for Science/ Research to any good hospital. Nothing should ever be wasted.
I wish more and more people came forward to do the right thing.
Instead, i see people only worrying what rituals they have to conduct, and how much would it cost, and despite being aware, they forget it and just keep drowning themselves in the stupid rituals.

  7. I’ve been wanting to sign up for this from long, but my husband is yet to make up his mind about this. Once he’s sorted, both of us will be signing up for sure.

  8. I have been contemplating this thought since a long, in fact, some time back during a conversation with Dad brought on the table. But it irked him beyond control and I quit discussion. But the urge is still burning inside. Thanks for igniting it again Shilpa.

  9. I’ve already pledged my organs a few years ago. Everyone in my family knows this wish of mine including the kids. It is something which each one of us must take up for sure.

  10. Nothing can be sacred deed than to give someone a new life. My parents have filled the form. I also want to be an organ donor but will have to see how it will work for me as neither I am in India not I am a US citizen.

  11. Do you know any live kidney organ donor or live kidney donating organization? I know someone who badly needs a kidney transplant.

  12. organ donation is a selfless way to help so many people. i donate blood regularly but even i forgot to get registered for organ donation. thanks for the gentle reminder.
