A Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose!

Things are as they are, not as they should be!

Of W and W!!

I hate it.

At the same time, I am very concerned about it.

Seeing the growing proportions gives me momentary panic attacks.

In a flash of a second, I make plans to take some remedial action. And the very next moment, I find some very important and very urgent diversions.

So, days have passed into months and the reverse is happening. The wide is becoming wider and weak is becoming weaker!

I am talking about the ever widening waistline and the weakening will power to do something about the former.

I have all the good intentions to reduce the bulge and exercise but somehow these good intentions get pushed behind other commitments and mundane things.

One fine day, I get highly motivated and dig out my track suit from the closet and take 2 rounds of the jogging track in our apartment complex and there’s never a second day which sees the repeat action.

Some days I convince myself that I am very tired. While some days, I reason with myself that I had walked up and down the 17 stair-set of office thrice!!!

Some times I have important household chores to do and while some days I am plain lazy.644092_10151310614064714_320412660_n

Also, I have seen that you put off something for one day and ten days will pass by!

Another day in another month, inspired by Smita, I take out our treadmill from the store room and clean it. The day, saw me admiring my hard work of rolling the machine to a distance of 5 meters. Next day, I sync my iPod and download new songs on it. And somehow I motivate myself to stand on the treadmill. When I listened to the songs on iPod, I realised that the sweet romantic numbers which I had chosen could not keep pace with the rhythm of the brisk walking on treadmill. So, since then, my search for fast paced songs is on and till then the treadmill is on a pause mode…

The only form of exercise that I love is swimming and I am very passionate about it. Missing even a single day of swimming is a big No-No for me. But unfortunately the swimming season is for a limited time period and for the rest of the time, one needs to focus on walking, jogging etc.

Going to a gym or walking in the park doesn’t appeal to me much and neither does dieting. So making use of the treadmill at home is the bestest viable option I have. And even availing the benefits of a treadmill in the comfort of my home eludes me.

I guess, I suffer from Exercise Procrastination. Somebody said this and it mirrors my sentiments, β€œwhenever I get the energy to exercise, I sit down until it passes!”

Well, enough is enough and I’m going to stop procrastinating about my fitness regime… once I get around to it.Image 1

  1. Your problem has a simple solution and I say that from experience.
Morning walk of about half hour a day for 25 days a month will produce amazing results.
Have two glasses of water first thing in the morning before going for a walk.
Try and cut down on fried food…don’t give up,cut down.
Remember, eating and sleeping are just habits. If you wake up at 6 in the morning for a week, your body click will start ticking accordingly.

    1. Thanks a lot Mr. Chowla for the wonderful tips. Will definitely start working on my walk! Yes, it’s just about taking the first step….
      Poorie koshish karungi! πŸ™‚

  2. A very apt post Shilpa. Mirroring my thoughts… procrastination. I also have a treadmill that is biting the dust and needs to be greased. good reminder. Hope to get back on it soon. Will tell u about my progress πŸ™‚

  3. Err I put on weight sitting at home for 3 months doing next to nothing, and I can’t even exercise much now. All I can do is Pranayama and keep praying that I lose all the extra pounds πŸ˜›

    1. LOL @ “keep praying” πŸ˜€
They say Women, Weight Gain and Exercise form the eternal triangle and one has to be kicked out and that is weight gain… sigh, only, if it was a bit easier! πŸ˜›

  4. The fascinating aspect of your self is, like most of us you could found time to down load songs on to the ipod, clean the tread mill etc etc. But not time to spend 30 minutes working out.
We blame daily chores, pressing matters etc, but why not the work out too be a daily chore?
Sorry if I sound sermonizing. I do because it is easier to sermonize than put it in my life!!!!!

    1. Yeah, that is the weird part, I am very prompt and active in doing everything else, but the exercise part! You are absolutely right, making walking as part of the daily routine is the only solution to all this procrastination, lethargy etc etc! Thanks for the suggestion! πŸ™‚

  5. I walk for 30-45 minutes every day. Well, mostly. There is a strong motivation for doing it – In each direction there are some shops offering super-tasty things to eat (frozen sandwich, mini-pizza, vada-pav, momo, milkshakes with ice-cream, fresh juice, etc.). My aim is to reach those shops but I insist on walking over there. Works like a charm! πŸ™‚ Warning: This technique has potential to increase one’s weight instead of decreasing it πŸ˜›

  6. Shilpa,

I suggest that you keep a dog as pet. All your problems about not having will to walk will be over. Hope you find time to meet on your next visit to Delhi and we can find some more ways.

    Take care

  7. And why I do see so many get back to fitness posts after Diwali? πŸ˜‰ I agree that a fitness regimen sometimes is difficult to maintain. I am happy that I am so hooked to my brisk walking that I hardly ever miss it. We are known as the walking couple in our community. If hubby and I are not seen for a couple of days, people start getting worried ;-)! Wish you luck.

    1. That’s because so much of goodies hogging has happened during this festive season! πŸ˜€
Brisk walking is the bestest thing to do, and that’s so wonderful that you are hooked to it! Thanks, am inspired! πŸ™‚

    2. Having a partner is good and doing it outdoors is rejuvenating too. But do what works for you. I have maintained my body weight even after 2 kids and weigh 54 kgs. Initially, it takes some time to get used to the routine, but once you are hooked, trust me you will find time. Loads of luck to you :).

    3. Seeing me walking on the treadmill (in the evenings), KG pushed me to do it in the morning today and he started from today too. Hope we inspire/motivate each other and make this as a habit! 54 Kgs is super awesome!! I am impressed! Thanks a lot, Rachna! πŸ™‚

  8. That is the story of my life, Shilpa! I so need to get up and do something about it! I guess, I should start with using the apartment gym.. If only I weren’t so lazy! Husband is going to be here for a holiday, and we are planning a beach trip – that at least should motivate me πŸ™‚

  9. wow shilpa! do you read my mind? i told my yoga turor that i will be taking a break for 15 days only the 15 days has turned into 2 months. i told them afte r navaratri vacation. when my friends called me after navratri, i told them diwali vacation. hopefully tomorrow monday i have to pay the fee in advance, else i think i will never visit the studio. i am feeling very lethargic, if not for the calls from my friend i doubt if i will go even.

    1. I know the feeling, as I said earlier when you put off something for one day and ten days will pass by!! It is so easy to procrastinate!
Hope you went to your Yoga class today, Asha! πŸ˜€

  10. LOL to your pausing running on the treadmill because of your zealous search for the right songs!! I find that the best way to get ahead of that mundane exercise is if I keep it in front of the TV…then I can walk/jog for the duration of one serial without much effort! πŸ˜‰

  11. Well watching some fav TV show when you are on the treadmill may help…. πŸ™‚ And walking , may be if you can find a good exercise regime partner, it would be more interesting?

    1. TV is out of question, coz our TV room has a low seating arrangement with carpeted flooring and mattresses and cushions all over. So, the treadmill can’t be moved to that room! πŸ™
Finding a walking partner is a good option! Let me check that! πŸ™‚

  12. i had a good laugh at the ‘ my search for fast paced songs is on; till then the treadmill walk is on a pause mode’. gee , sounds closer home. WE shall overcome one day πŸ˜›

  13. Shilpa, I am just the opposite, I simply love working out, in fact it is not only my job but also an obsession. For years I have been in the habit of eating everything brown(that is healthy), and I work out for 1 hour with my students, and work out another 30 mins.doing some fantastic exercises the one can find in the Youtube, and then go for a workout in the gym for about 1 and half hours. I just love the machine workout and the cardio machines in the gym.
This has been my routine for years. But the battle of the bulge is on, because for the last 2 years the weight that I have put on is not budging, blame it on age, for it is all fine till you are in your 40s, but once you reach the 50 mark, all the weight goes and settles in the waist area, and try as many tricks to hoodwink the body, it will not budge so easily. I never used to believe, that age was a hurdle in losing weight, till I myself came to that stage.
So please do not find excuses to postpone exercising, for you are doing it for your own good. When you are young you can easily lose whatever weight you have put, with some dedication and will power, but once you let this stage pass then, believe it is would be very difficult to lose weight.
Take me for example, I keep changing the exercises, I eat healthy still after a particular age I am stuck. Though I have a lot of stamina, I am healthy, still, I am not able to get back my figure.
I keep telling all my students to be regular, and stick to the program and indulge once in a while.
Of course some people are genetically thin, for them age is not a problem.
Wish you all the best in your weight loss goals.

    1. Yes Shilpa, I am a fitness instructor, and have been in this line for the last 17 years. Do at least some 20 to 30 mins. of workout from the Youtube, go to Fitness blender, it is a very good site and has lots of variety, and the exercises are easy enough to follow by yourself, and you would be doing along with them, it is really very simple and also effective. Also do some neck exercises, you can go the site ” Muscles don’t end in the neck”, it is a fantastic site for facial exercises, for when we lose weight we also tend to sag in our face and neck and it always good to exercise them also. After the initial getting used to the exercises you can do the shorter version of the same set, which is also demonstrated there.
Just for fun go to these sites and have a feel of what they have to offer, you will like them.

  14. Story on my life especially with the advent of winters in time of the festival season.I can’t blame my laziness alone for the damage has been done by the sweets I ate on Diwali and then the tons of frieds too πŸ™

But I am determined to get back to my regular exercise regimen soon (don’t want to commit a day for I too am loving being lazy).
    Wonderful post Shilpa.

  15. πŸ™‚ I am sure you are not the only one who procrastinates when it comes to exercising. I have never had the need of hitting the gym and thank god for that. I would rather remain fat than working out. But I am super thin, so. πŸ˜›

  16. Procrastination.. What a nice word (lol)! There might be several out in this world who procrastinates arduous things.. But there are some who procrastinates even good simple things like me… Procrastination is out of laziness if I am not wrong… This post reflected a lot of me though I haven’t made an effort to reduce my weight! And right now I gotta study for my tomorrow’s semester exam but came here thinking I could learn later… PROCRASTINATION πŸ˜€

  17. Shilpa, you just wrote the post for me πŸ˜‰ ha ha….but I am glad to have company πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰

Anyway, I’ll tell you all about it, once I start my morning walks πŸ™‚

    1. So many of us in the same boat, Uma! Gives me some consolation! πŸ˜€
But we must be committed to walk and exercise!! Look forward to your exercising stories! πŸ™‚

    1. Yeah! That happens too, but have seen so many people who are so very passionate about going to a gym. It is a part of their daily routine! Wish I was so committed about it too!

  18. The story of my life albeit with a few differences but nevertheless almost the same. I blame the morning power-cuts which makes it difficult for us to rise pleasantly and the power comes very late. If we sweat it out, the sweat does not dry easily and makes it difficult when we get ready for work. Well, I can go on making excuses.

I wish you the best in the pursuit of you losing your weight.

    Joy always,
    Susan

    1. LOL @ “If we sweat it out, the sweat does not dry easily and makes it difficult when we get ready for work”…Very creative excuses!
Thanks a lot and hope you sweat it out too! πŸ˜€

  19. you understand me very well SG, Oh man .. it is so colddddddddd outside these days at 6am in morning , I jsut cant go out .. and hence my stomach is growingggggggggggggggggg πŸ™‚

although I personally feel running or jogging is the best exercise .. All the best with it , I usually hate walking but i make it a point that if I have to go anywhere I WALK , or climb stairs instead of lifts or escalators etc ..

    Bikram’s

    1. And not to mention the yummy goodies of the winters… Gajar ka Halwa, Revris and Gajjaks, Saag with Ghee and Makki Roti with Ghee/Butter again…
But these excuses apart, it’s really the time to start focusing on walks/jogging/exercises…
That’s a wonderful thing to do, Bikram… not taking the lifts and walking everywhere is the bestest form of exercise!

  20. I also wanted to reduce the weight or atleast maintain, but it seems like a herculean task to get motivated. Try Zumba or Aerobics class, make some new friends so that you don’t have any excuse to miss them.

    1. Yes, you are absolutely right, Mr Bhatia. It was the same for swimming. I looked so keenly to my swimming time. Guess, will have to develop the same passion for Walking too! πŸ™‚

    1. 30 minutes on treadmill is simply superb! Hopefully, I will increase my walking period too! πŸ™‚
Oh, swimming is awesome! It is so rejuvenating!! Simply love it! Learn it in the next season! Go for it, Kavita! πŸ™‚

  21. ditto…for the procrastination and the W&W’s!!

I talked to a dieticain and asked her if I should buy a treadmill, because all my plans of going for a walk, gymming and exercising are going awry, it would be easier to walk at home…she asked me, “do u have a shortage of space to hang your clothes? because trust me after the first few ‘josh’ filled days, that is what you will be using it for!!”

ah! true I thought, so I met my gynae…and she said, after two pregnancies, a lady’s waistline automatically inflates, no amount of workout will bring it down..just eat the right food and don’t worry too much about it! do you want you become a model..?”

And thereby i rested my grey cells and with it the thought of tackling my W’s!!!!!!

    1. Yes, that’s true. The josh of the treadmill goes after a while. But then it keeps getting revived too at irregular intervals. Thankfully, have never used it to hang clothes but am guilty of dumping it in the storeroom! πŸ˜›
LOL @ do you want you become a model? πŸ˜€

  22. Shilpa, I will stand in front of you for being lazy and giving excuses. I am big procrastinator of things. Especially exercising. Everyone tells me, oh you are so lean..you don’t have to work out. I know it’s not about leanness and about staying fit…somehow, I just can’t put my muscles together. Summers, I used to walk. Now that winter is setting in, I have all the reasons in the world to stay lazy. I should also check the sites that Rama has mentioned. And above all, I have a huge obsession of staying lean..:( good luck, waiting for the post on when your workout is successful.

    1. Wow!! Lucky you! for you are lean!! So, I guess, your laziness is justified in winters, at least!! πŸ˜€
Yeah, things are looking up, the treadmill is being put to some use!! Will share the progress too, hope that happens!! πŸ˜€

  23. ditto on the W and W dear…it is a never ending quest to go back to the old self ( used to be skinny during my college days!)
thanks for your wonderful comments, glad to follow you and loved reading your posts..

  24. Ah the mind, it simply convinces you so easily to be lazy πŸ˜› I too have been doing yoga daily for nearly a year now…It started off as a 1hr class and now its down to 30min session, but I hope to be regular. There are times when I have skipped my routine and trust me it is difficult to bring yourself to exercise daily though you know it is for your own good…
All the best, think of the wonderful wardrobe you could gift yourself and I think that should motivate you πŸ™‚

    1. Agree completely with you, Reshma! Giving up is so easy! It’s the perseverance that is difficult!
Hmmm… new wardrobe and also some old things which you dont fit into now… that’s a nice motivator! Thanks for inspiring πŸ™‚

  25. hahha..never though that you would be a procrastinator. Thankfully I can stick to an exercise regime. It is only my sweet tooth that negates all the hard work I do and I still end up with a Wide w πŸ˜›

    1. I am procrastinator for walking as an exercise!! For rest of the things, I am very quick and very efficient too! It is just this walking part that does not come into my fold easily! πŸ™
Aah, the sweet tooth is extra sweet here too! πŸ˜›
