He shifts his weight from one foot to another.

He looks uncomfortable, obviously not used to asking for help.

She smiles reassuringly while patting his arm and says, “Don’t worry, I’ll do it.”

A flicker of hope and doubt crosses his face, “You’ll do it? Despite all that?”

“Yes, despite all that,” she says firmly.

A Word for the Wise

Forgiveness

Just as you make mistakes, others make mistakes too. How do you respond to these situations? Do you hold a grudge against yourself and others? Forgive and do your best to forget. Move on because life is too short to be unhappy!

  1. I agree. Forgiveness is important. πŸ™‚ For ourselves, if not for anyone else. Liked the story, though it leaves me wondering what happened. Will mull over it for a while. πŸ˜€

    1. True, we need to forgive for our own peace and sanity.
Aha! Well, it could be lots of things… you have the creative liberty to think of plausible reasons for them to reach at this stage of their relationship. Would love to know your chain of thought, Vinay πŸ™‚

    1. Well said, when we forgive, we are relieving ourselves of the burden of being a victim–letting go of the pain and transforming oneself from victim to survivor and there lies our own peace and happiness. Thanks ME, glad you are enjoying these 55ers πŸ™‚

  2. Forgiveness is a difficult one for me. I, too, wonder what the story is about today. Perhaps a nurse helping a patient who has made a mess? Or a wife who is helping her husband even though he did her wrong in some way.

    1. I know, forgiveness does not come easy to us. But like they say, forgiveness is not an occasional act, it is a constant attitude. So making it a regular attitude can help us forgive others and ourselves easily.
I’d think of them as husband and wife πŸ˜€

  3. Nice woman! Not everyone can erase the scars caused by the hurt! But it takes a big heart to forgive them despite knowing the hurt caused. Very good 55er

    1. True. Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. But yes, when we forgive, we change the memory of our past into a hope for our future. Thanks Stephen, glad you liked this one πŸ™‚

    1. I so agree with you, Yolanda. We need to learn from our mistakes / hurt / pain / experiences and move on.

    1. I know, it’s tough to forgive when the pain or hurt is too intense. But holding grudges or resentment does us more harm!

  4. It takes a really strong heart to forgive. And you will always forgive someone if you value the relationship more than the person. Been there, done that, and thus I know that this piece of fiction is actually true!
Loving your 55 word posts, Shilpa! <3

    1. Oh yes, forgiving is the attribute of the strong. I read somewhere, if you value the person/relationship then forgive his folly. If you value the folly, forget the person.
Thanks a lot, Milthila. It’s good to know that you can relate to thee 55ers πŸ™‚

  5. Beautifully penned! In such small number of words, you’ve made us all ponder over so many vital things in life. I forgive easily and I try my best to forget too which is a lil’ hard.

    1. Thank you, Shalini. Glad that these 55 words made you reflect. Yes, while we may forgive, forgetting is still the hard part!

  6. Forgiving releases the burden of the forgiver and the forgiven both. They can then pick up the pieces and get on with life. Lovely story.

    1. I know what you mean, Parul. But we must remember that not to forgive is like being imprisoned by the past and that leads to a lot of pain and hurt. So forgive (howsoever hard that may be) as it always leads to a more peaceful heart.

  7. Oh yes. Shilpa I agree completely, till one forgives one keeps something toxic within oneself. Letting go of hurt and freeing oneself is so important for health. Lovely post.

    1. Yeah, holding grudges is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill the people who hurt you.
      Thanks Sunila πŸ™‚

  8. Shilpa, it is true that when we forgive, we become happier and calmer. You have chosen a great theme for the challenge and your posts are great tips on living well.

    1. Agree with you completely. Thank you so much, Sulekha. Glad you are liking these posts for the challenge. πŸ™‚

  9. Brilliantly worded shilpa πŸ™‚ you nailed it to the point !! I am glad to be reflecting on the similar lines. My word for today is forgiveness πŸ™‚

  10. Oh that’s my problem Shilpa! I never forget and yes forgiving is a long exercise for me. although i try my best to forgive for my own mental peace. Btw, as always you wisely and crisply let your thoughts in 55 words. Good one:)

    1. We are in the same boat, Asha. While, I forgive easily, forgetting the pain is the hard part! Hope we are able to do that too. Thanks a lot for your support, Asha. Appreciate it.

  11. Forgiveness is twice blessed…blesses the one who gives and the one who receives…It makes things so much better and makes moving on, easy! Loved the post, Shilpa!

    1. I like what you said. Agree, forgiving is good for our own self. Thanks Esha, glad you liked this one πŸ™‚

  12. I find myself in a quagmire of a situation, when i am forced to sak help of someone. So nice to read a heart warming tale on the subject:)

  13. You need to be really strong to forgive someone. And I’m somehow who finds it very hard to forgive. Maybe I should take this as a lesson.

    1. Yeah, forgiving does not come easily to most of us. But when we do that it always leads us to a more peaceful heart. It always leaves us happier and free to move on to create healthier relationships with others and with our own self.

  14. I am not a person who can stay mad at someone for long and so I end up forgiving people but that sometimes take a toll on me.
    Well portrayed Shilpa πŸ™‚

    Cheers

    1. That’s such a lovely attitude to have, Geetika! Gives you so much peace of mind too. Thanks, glad you liked it πŸ™‚

    1. Happens to most of us. I read this, ‘Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart’… so forgive we must, despite the pain /hurt /resentment.

  15. Imagine his relief! And her (I can’t get the english word for badappan!) Not many would have the courage to forgive and look beyond the slight! It takes a big heart to do that!
