I sense people staring, but are they really looking at me, I wondered.

Will they sense my hesitation? Or hear the tremble in my voice?

Will the inner turmoil show in my eyes?

Ah! The answers I seek as I wait at the corner of a busy street, to meet the strangers of the night.

Thanks a lot, Sid for your inputs!

  1. And those “strangers of the night” never care about what’s going on in her mind, do they? They don’t care that she might have a family somewhere, whom she might long to be together with again! They don’t realize that if they stop paying for this, little girls might not be stolen from their homes!

  2. This is such a sad tale for many of the women everywhere in the world. As much efforts are being taken for the same, the state by and large remains the same!

    Cheers

  3. This was a touching, Shilpa. I have always wondered how awful their lives would be. I have had the opportunity to interact with one of them and the conversation was heartbreaking. Your story reminded me of it.

  4. I’ve often tried to imagine her point of view. This is poignant. Also – have you read No One Can Love You Enough by Mayank Austin Soofi? It’s a brilliant book about his experience at observing a kotha at GB Road, Delhi.

  5. This is so sad, but such a reality. I’ve seen so many such girls in certain areas of the city and have always wondered what would have landed them here.
