Using stealth, the predator hid in stillness, waiting for the quarry to drift by.
Oblivious to the looming threat, the chickens clucked all over the yard.
The predator lunged forward and with a sweeping motion grabbed a chicken, impaling it with sharp teeth.
Yesterday, the predator was driven to its grave by the speeding truck.

you weave the words so well, Shilpa, these fragile lives are wiped out every day, something we wouldn’t otherwise give a second thought to, but it is spine chilling to read it here…
Yeah, life goes on for us and we hardly notice the pain and troubles of others. Thanks Shubhangi.
.. and so the cycle continues. You do pack a lot in your 55ers.
Yeah… the cycle continues… thanks a lot, Tulika!
How easily can a life can be taken…the most fragile is life… yet it is the most persistent too.
True, what’s today may not be there tomorrow, sadly!
I was thinking along the same lines for this prompt. How the lives of animals are in perpetual danger some from nature’s predators and others because they live close to humans. 🙁
True, animals in their wild state as well as in tamed state live in perpetual danger. The other day, I saw a few goats tied outside a butcher’s shop. And I was wondering, if they knew that they’d be meeting their death in a short while.
This reminds me of scenes from comic books! Nice 🙂
Yeah, now that you told me, I think so too 😀
That was brilliant Shilpa! Reminded me of the Coyote and the Road-runner!
Oh yes, in the series, Coyote’s attempts to catch the Road Runner comically backfires every time. I remember seeing Looney Tunes ages ago with my son! You are too much into Cartoon Network, Kala. It’s a phase, I know 😀
Lives are fragile indeed. Loved your imagination.
Thanks Nats!
Lives, whether of animals or humans, always seem to be in danger of something. Sometimes the danger is unknown while at times it is know. Liked your take on the prompt Shilpa 🙂
Yes, that’s how laws of nature work… Mr Darwin and his survival of the fittest, food chain etc….
Thanks Nabanita!
How beautifully you play with words, shilpa!! and oh yes, fragile lives…..
Thanks a lot, Asha. Glad you liked this attempt!
This story can be easily related to with human tendencies. At just the moment when we feel we have conquered something, some situation can snatch it all away from us.
Aha! You have interpreted it so deeply, Mithila! Loved your thoughts 🙂
As sudden as the snapping of our fragile lives….Good one Shilpa…
Sadly yes. Thanks Sunaina!
Even the predator’s life is fragile, too. So true. Nature and civilization can take their toll and no creature is immune.
Well written and you packed so much into a short word count. Well done!
Yes, the laws of evolution are very much into play all the time. Thank you for your kind words, Cathy!
Every living creature is leading a fragile life. Small insects have to beware of predators and the rest need to beware of humans. Irony it is. Everyone is struggling for their life!
It sure was a powerful one Shilpa in mere 55 words!
Cheers
The struggle for existence is present in every life and the fittest and strongest of the lot wins at the expense of others. Thanks Geetika! Glad you liked it.
You clinched it with the last line Shilpa! Still, can’t help feeling sorry for both. It is the law of life.
Sadly, it’s a dog-eat-dog world! Thanks Vidya!
Nicely narrated. Goes to prove we all lead fragile lives. 🙂
Thank you, EM.
Lives… no matter who’s its so fragile. Beautifully written.
True that. Thanks Sheethal.
The fragile lives we lead should make us appreciate our present without worrying about the future. If only we could do that. Love how you say so much in such few words.
Well said. If only we realize the beauty of the present, life would be much sorted and happier for all of us. Thanks Sulekha!
Much said in 55 words, Shilpa!
Real story of life…
Thank you, Anita.
Fragile lives, all. We just never know, when the time runs out.
Oh yes, we live in uncertain times!
Great play with the words, Shilpa. And a cracking take on the prompt too!
Thanks a lot, Sid!
It is the ecological balance of nature with the human intervention. Well said in few words.
True that, the laws of nature are very much into play. Thanks Anamika.
